Nebraska AIDS Project and the Keystone Group celebrated the excitement of the French Quarter and Mardi Gras during the first annual Mardi Gras on the Missouri on Friday, May 9, 2008.

We brought a bit of New Orleans flair and a whole lotta sizzle to the banks of the Missouri River -- with Cajun food, Zydeco and Dixieland bands, beads, costumes, performing artists and a French Market.

This celebration raised much-needed funds for the Nebraska AIDS Project's comprehensive client programs and services, as well as its ongoing education and outreach programs.

October 15 marks the culmination of Hispanic Heritage Month and signals the annual observance in the fight against AIDS: National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD).

In the United States, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has adversely affected Latino/Hispanic communities, and its impact on these communities continues to grow at disproportionate rates.

�

Currently, Hispanics/Latinos comprise 15.3 percent of the U.S. population, but account for 24.3 percent of the new HIV infections in the U.S. In response, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day was created in 2003 as a mobilizing vehicle implemented at the local level to help stem the tide of HIV/AIDS in Latino communities.

This year's theme - Unidos Podemos: Detetengamos al VH/SIDA. La Prevencion empieza con nosotros: HIV/AIDS Stops Here. Prevention Starts With Us speaks to the importance of working together to educate the community to prevent the infection from spreading, to encourage HIV testing; to provide medical treatment and care, and to continue to advocate for those living with HIV/AIDS.

A variety of events have been planned to increase awareness and education of HIV and AIDS and to provide free, confidential HIV testing by Nebraska AIDS Project, in partnership with One World Community Health Clinic, Planned Parenthood, American Red Cross Heartland Chapter, Douglas County Health Department, Mexican Consulate, Radio Lobo, UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities, Methodist College, Metropolitan Community College, Latina Resource Center, Creighton University, UNMC Community Health Clinic and the RESPECT Clinic.

Nebraska AIDS Project was organized in 1984 when medical professionals, Catholic nuns, Health Department officials, concerned citizens, friends, family members and lovers joined together for one cause -- fighting AIDS. Organized to provide compassionate support to those dying with AIDS and to provide education to prevent the further spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, NAP remains true to its original mission: prevention and support. Project Homeless Connect

Project Homeless Connect, started in San Francisco and extending now to 170 communities, is a one-day event that serves as a one-stop shop, connecting homeless individuals to needed services, including: housing, healthcare, legal resources, Social Security, food-stamp benefits, and employment. Nebraska AIDS Project (NAP), with help from Next Generation Omaha, will be providing testing to at-risk homeless individuals. NAP client service specialists will be available to assist with case management and housing opportunities available to HIV positive individuals. The event will take place at Creighton University's Kiewit Center on Friday March 27th from 8:30am to 3:30pm. This will be a fun, exciting, different and entertaining event to inform our community of Nebraska AIDS Projects prevention, outreach and education efforts to help eliminate the spread of all STD's and HIV. People who are sexually active need to know that the only source of protection for partners and most importantly them self is using condoms consistently and correctly. There will be a variety of messages throughout the 2 hour event on safe sex, communication with partners and getting tested to know your status. There will also be a demonstration on correct condom use. The event is being held in a bar atmosphere and everyone must be minimum age of 21.

This year NAP is hosting the Project Runway Condom Fashion Show 2010 as a way to increase community awareness and help raise funds for our prevention, outreach, and education efforts. Omaha Royals benefit for Nebraska AIDS Project

Hey all! NAP is partnering with the Omaha Royals to celebrate diversity on Thursday, May 20th! Proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit NAP!

Come join us for a night of fun! It's a Thirsty Thursday so $1 beers and $1 cokes. Your first drink is courtesy of the Royals! Prior to the game there's a parade and someone from our contingent will throw out the first pitch!

Come celebrate NAP, diversity in Omaha, and the final season at Rosenblatt Stadium.

You can order reserve tickets for $10. The deadline is May 7th for presale.

Testing will be cancelled Thursday May 20th for the Omaha Royals Benefit Game for Nebraska AIDS Project. Thursday testing will resume the following week.
